Many people suffer from the lack of a good night sleep. They wake up feeling like they haven’t slept at all and struggle to stay awake throughout their day. Maybe they have a sleep disorder called obstructed sleep apnea (OSA), and they’re not using their CPAP machine. Why?
OSA is a sleep disorder that results from the airway becoming partially or completely blocked during sleep. This results in snoring and even periods of not breathing. The blockage can be caused by muscles and tissue inside the neck that have become too relaxed thereby narrowing or closing off the airway when you lay on your back to sleep. A CPAP machine, or continuous positive airway pressure machine, gently blows air into your mouth or nose using continuous light pressure to keep the airway open.
The machine is small enough that it can easily sit on a nightstand and attaches to you by using an air mask and tubing. This is where we can begin to understand why some are not using their CPAP. It is different. It is cumbersome. It can feel unnatural. If the mask doesn’t fit right, you wake up with dry mouth and stuffy nose. At Americare Respiratory Services, we understand. We are knowledgeable and experienced in helping customers adjust to their new way of sleeping with the CPAP.
Here are a few tips that may help. First, we offer many different types of masks – some the cover the entire face and some that cover only the nose. Keep trying different masks until you find the right one for you. Also, condensation can build up inside the mask if it is not fitting properly. Second, dry nose and dry mouth can be prevented by using a humidifier with your CPAP machine. We can advise you on which one might work for you. Third, if you feel claustrophobic, try wearing the mask while your awake, without the air pressure on. Also, wear your CPAP mask for shorter periods of time and work up to a full night.
If you have been diagnosed with OSA and prescribed a CPAP or BiPAP machine, it is important to your health and your daily life to use it. Our Care Specialist are ready and willing to offer ongoing support and unsurpassed service.
