The full benefits of CPAP therapy for sleep apnea are only achieved when you CPAP machine is properly maintained. There are a number of parts and accessories that require regular cleaning and/or replacement to ensure you get the maximum benefit of CPAP therapy. In this post, we’ll give you some general guidelines on how often to clean and replace your CPAP machine, parts, and accessories.
The CPAP machine itself needs to last you at least 5 years in order for insurance (Medicare) to cover the cost of a replacement CPAP machine. If you adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, you can extend the life of your CPAP device. Some items require maintenance every 2 weeks, while other parts can last for 3 or 6 months.
CPAP parts and accessories to clean and replace include:
- Filters – clean twice/month, replace every 6 months
- Humidifier chamber – clean twice/month, replace every 6 months (and always use distilled water)
- Head strap and chin strap – replace every 3-6 months
- 6-foot tubing (standard and heated tubing) – replace every month
- Mask, cushion / pillows – clean twice/month, replace every 2-3 months
The CPAP filter is probably the most important component to keep clean and replace on schedule. The recommended schedule is to replace it every 6 months and rinse it with clean water every 2 weeks.
Replacing your tubing is also important for proper CPAP maintenance. Too much moisture inside the tube can theoretically lead to overgrowth of bacteria that you don’t want to inhale.
There are little or no risks to your safety when using a CPAP machine that is properly cleaned and maintained. If you have invested in a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea, why not invest the time and energy it takes to keep it like new. Insurance will typically cover the cost of replacement CPAP parts/accessories according to the schedule above.
