For mild cases of sleep apnea, you may get some relief with home remedies but nothing is as effective as CPAP therapy. The problem that arises when a person has sleep apnea is the airway closes. CPAP therapy uses pressurized air to keep the passages open all night long. There is no replacement for what a CPAP machine can do for you.
You can reduce your risk of developing serious (possibly fatal) sleep apnea if you:
- Stop smoking
- Don’t abuse alcohol or drugs
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Sleep on your side
- Try a contoured pillow
Some other home remedies have been suggested to reduce swelling and irritation in the throat that is associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Examples include honey, chamomile tea, warm milk with turmeric, and peppermint. Throat exercises may also help widen your airway.
